Hawks Edge Wings 3-2 Behind Monster Games By Toews and Hossa

The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 on Friday night in front of a rabid United Center crowd.  Things got off to a rocking start in the first period with Dan Carcillo absolutely destroying Todd Bertuzzi with the hit of the year for the Hawks so far.  Bertuzzi would take offense and Carcillo would answer the bell getting the better of the fisticuffs.  Both would go for 5 minutes and the game was on.

Detroit would draw first blood on a play that Patrick Kane was late on the back check and it was Justin Abdelkader beating Corey Crawford to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.  The Hawk would strike back when Jonathan Toews was hooked on a clean breakaway by Nicklas Lidstrom and was awarded a penalty shot.  Toews beat Jimmy Howard with his signature penalty shot 5 hole move and the game was tied at 1 goal apiece.  But at 5:25 of the second period Detroit would retake the lead when a Jonathan Ericsson shot deflected off of Todd Bertuzzi and in for a 2-1 Wings advantage.  Just 2 minutes later it was Marian Hossa with a rocket of a slap shot beating Jimmy Howard to tie the game.  Just 1:52 into the third period, the Hawks took their first lead of the game in what proved to be the game winning goal with Brent Seabrook launching a rocket from the point that beat Howard and gave the Hawks a 3-2 lead.  The Hawks would fail to convert on three third period power plays but hung on to win the first meeting of the year with the Red Wings.  Chicago improved to 24-10-4 on the year and 14-3-3 on home ice.  More importantly the Hawks opened up a 5 point lead in the Central Division standings on Detroit.  The Hawks will skate next Monday night against the upstart Edmonton Oilers.  Chicago is 1-1-0 on the year against Edmonton.
